8 Ways To Have Lots Of Outfits When You're On A No Buy

Earlier this year I told myself that I really need to go on a "no buy" or self imposed shopping ban. It's just a lot healthier for my wallet and also for my state of mind. I find that having too much stuff can be quite stressful and right now, I think I have more than enough stuff. I don't need more new clothes and accessories. I mean, not really anyway :D  So I have imposed a "No buy" until May. After that, we shall see. It's actually perfect timing as now is not really the time to be spending profligately and unnecessarily. Problem is, I love shopping and style and coming up with outfits too much so it got me thinking, how can I have lots of different outfits while on a "no buy"? I came up with 8 ways to do this and all it really involves is looking at what you currently have in your closet and finding ways to make it all look new and also wearing stuff you don't normally wear. I think it's also a great way to exercise your creativity and resourcefulness! Especially in these times! Check it out!

1. Fold your blouse/skirt/top in another way.

I've been observing a lot of style setters online and I noticed that a lot of them do a variety of things with their tops like fold or knot it in a different way. I found this to be quite an effective way to make your clothes and your look feel "new". Here, all I simply did was tuck my top in halfway. I've also experimented with a giant brooch and gathered my shirt and pinned it in the middle. It became a totally new top if you ask me! And you spent zero! One hack if you don't have a brooch : use a giant statement earring! You can also button up your tops in the wrong holes and trust me it gives a whole new look!

2. Accessorize

Probably the most common way of switching up your outfits with minimal fuss. Switch up your accessories often! I am wearing the same shirt in all photos but switched up my necklaces three times, with one being a necklace party! Don't be afraid to combine many different accessories all at once! You can also jazz up your plain dresses like my white one below with bangles, bags and colorful shoes.

3. Take two different things you normally do not wear together.

I'm sure we have all these outfit combinations that we wear all the time (for me its a white top and jeans with heels!). It's combinations we know are tried and tested and an excuse to resort to lazy chic dressing. But I'm also sure that we all have so many items in our closets that we have not worn a lot or paired with other items. I think that is a golden opportunity to create a myriad of outfits! Try wearing one piece with another piece you normally would not wear. Here, I took that same white dress and wore it over pants. I normally don't ever do this whole dress-over-pants thing but now that I see how it looks, I now cannot wait to do more combinations! Be more adventurous and try to find more unlikely pairings in your closet!

4. Get inspired with color paletting

I've mentioned in my Style Goals post in the beginning of the year that I want to wear more color. I noticed how "color paletting" is such a thing now. I remember around 2013 or 2012 there was a thing called "color blocking" and I feel like that's where color paletting mutated from. Anyway, I don't usually like wearing two colorful items at once but I realized if you experiment a little bit,  there are those colors that look great together. My latest experiment rendered this bright yellow and light blue top! I would probably never have worn this combination before, but now that I've seen that they look great together, I can't wait to experiment more! You can try to mix and match your colors in your closet and see what works!

5. Give one piece of clothing a face lift with another piece of clothing

I think I was browsing through Instagram one day and saw this girl wearing a skirt with what looked like a scarf over it. It got me thinking to do the same - it's weird because there is actually a skirt that I was eyeing and wanted to buy and it looked like it had a scarf layer over it. But now that I've tried this hack I think I might have just saved myself a bundle! I tried layering over pants too and it works just as well. Try layering scarves or even other tops or skirts over the other to create new and unique looks!

6. Shop your closet

Well this is self explanatory. As I mentioned above, this whole article is based around the stuff that you already have in your closet. Maybe you forgot a special skirt you've been saving for the longest time? Or forgot a red top that you barely wear? Look through your clothes and trust me, I guarantee you will find many many options and will see your current wardrobe in a new light.

7. Do a style swap

I do this a lot with my sisters! Every once in awhile we each individually go through our closets to get rid of stuff either to donate or sell online and sometimes there are some items that my sister likes from my pile and vice versa. So we then exchange items! This is one way of having actual new clothes without having to spend a penny! You can do this with your girlfriends as well!

8. Wear pieces differently than you normally would

Another thing I gleaned from watching and following Beth Jones from B. Jones Style (one of my favorite style vloggers by the way!) is that she is always coming up with ways to wear different articles of clothing differently. One of those ways is wearing button down tops backwards like I did here! It's a genius hack that I never thought of and it literally gives you a brand new blouse! Another hack I learned from another fave style vlogger, Shaira Luna, is to wear your button down tops as a skirt! Who knew it would work right? So many possibilities and options! You can also wear your skirt or scarf as a top or maybe a shirt as a headscarf!

  2. I love this post for several reasons: the most important one is that it fights unreasonable consumerism. Clothes can be worn so many times, yet many bloggers encourage frequent shopping and discarding of clothes. Thank you for this!!
