I've long been admiring Tamu McPherson's style and today's style breakdown is all about her fabulous sense of style! Tamu first fell into my radar (years and years ago!) as a street style photographer for Glamour.it. Later on she turned her passion and work into a blog called "All The Pretty Birds". I think she started photographing all these street style setters and it turns out, her style is also just as amazing (maybe even better) than these photographed stars. I love how her style is adventurous but still effortless. She puts together pieces so well, pieces you wouldn't think look great together but make sense when you see them on. I've definitely gotten so much inspiration from her! I'm really loving her latest outfits : she has been putting together outfits during lockdown and some are in videos and all of them are to die for! She is fun and elegant at the same time. She wears a lot of color and accessories but still looking very sophisticated all the time. Just like all the other women I featured for "Style Breakdown", Tamu's style has a timelessness to it and outfits she's worn in the past can still be worn today! .Check out her Instagram or the rest of this post for more inspiration! For this post, I'll be breaking down all her latest looks that she's worn and posted on her Instagram. Read through to get inspired!
Her take on statement pieces
Even if some of the dresses she wears are already such a statement, I love how she usually keeps her accessories simple enough to complement the dress but bold enough to make statements of their own. She does this by adding colorful accessories. Below we see examples of her wearing a bold puffy sleeved dress but paired with minimal sandals - but in a pink color. We also see her wearing a neutral dress that has these cool design elements and paired it with bright yellow shoes.
Mixing and matching bold prints and colors
When she does wear separates or more bold patterns and prints and colors, she still styles in a way where they look perfectly curated and edited. All the items that she mixes and matches look like they really belong together. It doesn't look like they are all put together haphazardly and made out to be just because it's "fashion". It's all still very much edited and within her style aesthetic. For example, in the first outfit below, we see print on print with different colors but colors that look great together and paired with a pop of minimal (just very minimal) pink by way of her sandals. I also like that she added a belt to break the look up. Everything just literally goes together even if some items are ones you normally would not wear together.
Wearing trends uniquely and making it her own
I'm not a huge fan of trends and "it" items unless I really, really like it. I feel like Tamu might have the same feelings toward them because I spotted her wearing some of the biggest trends or "must have" items these days but I see her style them and make the look all her own. I've seen the Frankie shop padded tee, Bottega mules and Bottega snake coil sandals pretty much on every fashion blogger, influencer and their mother and I'm starting to get sick of it. Tamu has all these three items that I mentioned, yet on her, it looks rather timeless. And she molded them into her outfits and tuned it to her sense of style so perfectly. Again, she expertly makes these of-the-moment items look like they really belong together with the rest of the pieces on the outfit she's sporting that day.
How she does simple styling
Tamu also wears "simple" looks but they look anything but ordinary. The first outfit below is seriously one of my favourite outfits that I've seen online and ever. She's wearing a simple neutral dress but made it totally her own by throwing in pointy satin emerald green kitten heeled mules and one big bold necklace. It's super chic. The second and third looks are "simple" in the sense that she paired neutral colors together (like gray and tan in the second and black and white in the third). But again she makes it her own by adding just a hint of bold and unique accessories with the orange sunglasses in the second and gold shoes in the third.
Just now, writing about Tamu's latest outfits, it came to my mind that her style aesthetic is like a concerto or a symphony. You have all these lovely but different notes and many different types of musical instruments - but they all still go together. And all "conducted" and put together to make sure the composers' vision (the designers) make a beautiful and cohesive sound by their conductor, Tamu. (Literally just thought of this now as I am listening to Brahm's violin concerto) I Really love her style (also Brahm's concerto is amazing!)!
