Styling Up A Matching Vintage Set With 5 Different Outfits

I found this matching vintage top and skirt set from a stash of clothes that used to belong to my grandmother. I noticed matchy-matchy sets were such a thing in the olden days but I personally am not really into it. However, I was just thinking that there must be some reason why this was considered "fashionable"  at one point in time. If you look at vintage fashion photos and see all these women wearing matching sets, you notice that they all looked pretty chic. So I was thinking that there must be some way to style them now to make it look current and stylish.

I've actually worn both pieces many times but always separately. I would wear the top either with jeans, shorts or other skirts and I would wear the skirt with other tops. I have never worn these together ever. The skirt features a really great fall and flare and the top features a round neck and some slight cuts at the waist which makes it ideal for tucking into bottoms. I thought I would challenge myself and actually try to style them up in its original form. Here's how I styled them.

1. Brooching it up

As if the prints didn't have enough flowers in them - I decided to pin another rose brooch - just to add more dimension to the outfit. I paired it with my lovely Odette heels from my line Sala Chaussures and kept the rest of the accessories simple with a clutch and some citrine drop earrings (stolen from my mom).

2. Creating A New Shape

Since the matching set is a pretty simple and straightforward cut and shape, I thought I would experiment by creating a sort of "ripple" design to the skirt. I did this with a gold curved brooch and I thought it worked out pretty well! I paired it with some vintage looking glasses with light lenses (from my very good friends' eyewear brand), a small brown sling bag I found from a family trip to Sri Lanka ages ago and yet another sample from my shoe line Sala Chaussures, that never made it to production. You can actually just wear any old neutral shoes with this outfit idea!

3. Making it sporty

One of the very few sneakers that I own are these gold Cole Haan ones that I found for super sale at an outlet. I thought it would go perfectly with the color tones of the dress! I also still added in some girly factors though with a headband and a vintage necklace.

4. Belting it up

Another way to add some new life and breaking up the print is belting the whole look up. I like that it  cuts through the mono flower print and gives shape to the outfit. I paired it with some  heeled pumps but I feel like this look could work really well with a pair of dark colored peep toe heels too!

5. Scarfing it

I was so inspired by this Carrie Bradshaw outfit that I dug out some really old platform sandals that I had and threw a scarf on my neck and wore this neutral button down dress over it as like a "coat". It's way too hot to wear real coats here in my country so I improvised with a really lightweight dress. And yes its not ironed yet again but I think wrinkles add so much character to outfits!

What do you guys think? How would your wear/ style up matchy-matchy vintage sets?
