It's been a minute since I last wrote here, but with good reason : I've been away for most of May on a holiday! I spent almost three weeks traveling to Scotland and Spain and it was a most marvelous time! Of course I had to make a video and post on what I packed and wore! I'm doing this mostly because I've been wanting to keep an archive and record of building outfits around a capsule wardrobe, and this time, a travel edition.
In the Isle of Skye, Scotland with my capsule travel wardrobe
Eilean Donan castle, Scotland
If you've been checking out some of my past posts/videos on travel and capsule wardrobes - I've actually been obsessing over the perfect travel capsule wardrobe. I have been determined to really pack more lightly for all my trips - after all, we do want to leave some space for shopping! But at the same time, I still wanted to somehow have myself a stylish little vacation using whatever pieces I could manage to bring and fit in. I decided to pack only pieces that I knew would go with every single item. That would mean neutral colours and maybe one pop of a bold colour, and then some accessories.
Light neutral colours for a sunny and hot day in La Mancha, Spain
The Windmills of Don Quixote in La Mancha, Spain
I picked and chose and picked and chose and finally decided on pieces in black, white, navy blue and nude palettes. I decided that red would be my pop of colour - I brought one red top and my red Sala Chaussures pointy mules. I found that I made the best decision in making red my pop of colour because it actually went with a lot more looks than I thought! Another thing to pack that can add to the pizazz to the capsule items : accessories! They are light and small and easy to pack so I suggest picking key pieces and checking to make sure they also go with all the other items that you are planning to bring. I ended up bringing some lightweight scarves and statement earrings and one baroque pearl necklace.
My entire palette for this trip is actually found in this outfit : consisted of mostly blue, white, black and neutrals.
In Glasgow with my most used item of the trip - white cropped jacket from Zara
Accessories that I brought - locally made earrings from Merriam Batara (hoops) and Oi Mooi (small pearls) and a basic black scarf that I made into a rose
In Stirling Castle (Scotland) with neutrals and pop of red for dinner out
Accessory staple for the trip - baroque pearls from Ancru. An evening out in Madrid outfit idea
Instead of creating outfit ideas per day/per itinerary, I decided to just literally try as many outfit combinations as I could with all the final pieces I was going to bring and then saving it into a folder in my phone like so. I would have a little archive of outfits on hand on my phone that I can reference when planning my outfits!
My little archive of planned outfits, some have labels to remind me of an outfit I wanted to wear for a particular day or excursion
I don't know if that sounds complicated to you but to me it was the most space and time saving action I did for the trip! It was such an efficient way of putting together outfits per day because I'm not overthinking every day. I only brought a medium suitcase and I was already underweight and had a lot of space after packing everything (one bad thing was that I may have over shopped and ended up overweight at the end of the trip, but that's already a separate problem and not a problem that had anything to do with my precious capsule wardrobe idea :D)
All neutrals in Circus Lane, Edinburgh with a pop of red from my blouse and cherry printed scarf
Arrived to Madrid. This is the first dinner out look and I changed to my red mules and added the white blazer to transform my day outfit to night!
All black on the streets of Glasgow
Elevating an otherwise basic outfit with accessories
I also really was determined to bring as many locally made and designed pieces including a pair of my beloved Sala Chaussures of course! Why not showcase talents from your country as much as you can to the world right?
MVP travel bag that I wore literally everyday from Rags2Riches
The other MVP bag of the trip was this big black one which was my hand carry for the plane and also for days when I needed a bigger bag. This is also locally made from Costal Leather Bags
Rainy day in Edinburgh ft. the other MVP bag of the trip
Overall I think the packing and outfit planning was a success! One thing I had to factor in (also a tip to you guys incase you go on a trip like this) is the change in weather. I was doing two countries spanning almost three weeks in a month of transitional weather. Scotland was a bit chilly and rainy on most days and Spain was just so hot and dry! I just made sure that I packed enough cool coloured clothing and one pair of shorts for Spain. I also decided on doing light layers for Scotland. Enough to stay warm but not have to bring any big and bulky coats! I think that strategy worked out pretty well!
Jackets and light layers for a gloomy and chillier Edinburgh
Short sleeves for sunny Madrid
All white and shorts to keep cool in Madrid
Also, since it was such a long trip, I knew I was bound to maybe get bored with the stuff that I brought. So I ended up just wearing some of the new things that I bought and they all also went well with the existing items of clothing that I had. And that, ladies and gentlemen was really the whole point in packing a capsule wardrobe. It was designed to create as many different outfits utilizing pretty much any piece within the collection. And that any new piece added would automatically go with anything too. Pretty great solid idea right?
Madrid evening outfit and wearing some new pieces like the top and brooches
Another new item I wore right in Madrid - a striped skirt from Glasgow
Tweed rose brooches, a black ball earring that I randomly found at a thrift shop in Glasgow and a Highland cow earring!
Strolling the streets in Madrid with some new gold ballet flats
Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid
Hope you guys got some ideas from this post! How do you guys pack for longer trips?

I love all of these elegant outfits! The scarves are a pretty touch. I wrote a list of outfits for our 2 weeks in the republic of Georgia but ended up repeating some favorites. www.chezmireillefashiontravelmom.com
